7/12/11

Today I was instructed to meet at the Denver office for training which is literally right in the center of downtown. Kristin told me to meet her there at 10 AM so it was a little earlier day and I ate breakfast in the lobby, got some directions from Danny on how to get there and where to park, and then headed out by 9:10. I was able to park all day for $8 which is one of the cheapest rates. It was a two block walk up Market Street, and I had to lug my Cadwell Cascade Monitoring equipment in a suitcase behind me.

I was very impressed with the building--it was old brick and even the interior albeit modern had the exposed brick visible in many places which gave it an old world/modern workplace sort of feel. We had reserved a conference room so for most of the day we went through online tutorials on the projector together and whenever I had a question or didn't understand something, Kristin explained it to me.

At noon Kristin gave me a lunch break and instructed me where some different restaurants were. I grabbed a deli sandwich across the street and called Sylvia since she also works downtown and I knew that she usually took her lunch break at noon. Sure enough she was eating lunch a few blocks down with some lawyer friends. Since it would have been a bit of a far walk I took the "Free Mall Ride." There are enormous buses that run all day until 1 AM back and forth down 16th Street Mall where all the shopping and restaurants are. They are free and you can get on and off as you please. The downtown area is so beautfiul, there are lights strung, people walking dogs and bicycling, and the buildings are tall yet have a lot of character and don't feel overbearing. It's very pleasant to walk around downtown, and everyone does. I got to the place where Sylvia and her friends were eating off of Stout and chatted for a while before returning to work.

Around 4 Kristin let me go and I dropped my equipment off in the car so I could wander around downtown for a little bit. I walked up and down 16th Street Mall and took the Free Mall Ride again. When I got tired I headed back to the car and then to the Whiteside's in Lakewood. I was able to take Colfax Ave all the way down thereby skipping some of the 5 PM traffic. I got to finally see the downstairs where Mr. Richard and Mrs. Ellie stay and keep their furniture and they made me delicious hamburger helper! (but with turkey haha!) and we had salad too! We got in a lot of talking and I even got to see how their garden out back has grown. It looked really good and I got to try some baby strawberries. Mrs. Ellie and I had a drawn out conversation about what color the walls in the living room were. I said they were an off white while she insisted they were green or "celery" as she put it. I guess I will have to wait to see it in the daylight.

I headed to Sylvia's apartment around 9 PM or so and it had just begun to storm. I was pretty nervous because they do not have drainage ditches on the sides of the roads like we do in Texas so the puddles can become quite deep, and the streets easily flood. I lost traction a few times, but never totally lost control so I was able to make it! Sylvia made salmon salads for us and we went to bed early!
