7/27/11

This morning I had a case at St. Anthony Central Ortho Colorado with Erica. We met at the hospital at 6:15 this morning. The case was a short one, only 2.5 hours. It was on a young girl only 21 years old. It was a lumbar case coming from the anterior angle which means that a general surgeon comes in to expose the spinal column by retracting back vessels and organs, the neurosurgeon does the decompression, placing of the cage in the disc space, and fusion with plates, and then the general surgeon comes back to close up and remove the retractors. These type of surgeries have a higher success rate among young people, whereas older people generally get lumbar surgery from the posterior angle, coming through the back. This means that the screws and plates can be seen and felt. Coming from the anterior, the plates are hidden beneath organs.

After my surgery I spent most of the day updating my blog, working on other things for work on my computer, tying needles for my two surgeries all day tomorrow, and going to Target to get some groceries and other things.

Now I am watching Design Star so I can get caught up with my mom! I miss watching it with her :/ Good night!

7/26/11

This morning everyone woke up around 4:30 in the morning to get ready and pack for the drive home. I was so sad to see my family leave, and I didn't really feel like doing anything after they did so I just sat around in my room for a while and tried to fall back asleep. Finally around 10 AM I got a text from Kristin asking me to come to the Louisville office for my first practical test. I went down to Kenyatta to get the dummy back and then went to the Flatiron Mall for a little bit just to walk around and do something.

I got chinese food in the mall food court. They were having a summer special 2 entrees for 5.99 (versus 1 entree for 5.69) so I went ahead and got the orange chicken and sweet and sour chicken. I headed to the office around 1:15 so I got there early and had about 20-30 minutes to go over my notes and prepare for the test, and plan what I would monitor in some scenarios with the dummy. When Kristin got there I started my test which was to hook everything up in 45 minutes, including the needle electrodes in the patient, and set pretend baselines (even though you can't fully do that with the dummy). I finished before the timer, and Kristin said that I did a good job so I was happy about that.

We finished around 5 PM and I headed back to the hotel. Danny called me and asked if I wanted to get dinner so we went to Lodo's right on 104th. Kenyatta had already gone downtown to get seafood. I ate my leftover chinese before we went so I didn't get any food. We came back to the hotel and met up with Kenyatta who had our name badges for the operating room and hung out for a while before going to bed.

I was scheduled to have a surgery in Denver at 10:30 this morning, but at 8:30 I got a text saying the schedule had changed and that I needed to be at St. Anthony's Central Hospital in Lakewood at 9!!! I literally threw on my clothes grabbed my stuff and ran out the door. I had to take a Slimfast because I didn't have time to eat breakfast or do anything else. I got to the hospital a little after 9 and met one of the techs Sylvia for the case. I set up the equipment and the procedure was a lumbar (lower back) case. I got to put in all the needles and do most of the work during the procedure.

By the time the procedure ended I was STARVING! Kenyatta, one of the other trainees, had asked me if she could get the dummy to do some practice runs with so I needed to go back to the hotel. My family was in Golden again, and had gone down a toboggan! They were driving to the Whitesides around 5:00-5:30 which gave me just enough time to scoot back to the hotel to give Kenyatta the dummy, drive through McDonald's for a double cheeseburger, and get to the Whiteside's house.

We ate outside on the Whiteside's patio again as the weather was amazing. I got to the house at the perfect timing! As I was pulling up, Mr. Richard and my dad were pulling out to go pick up the pizzas from Pizza Hut.

We enjoyed pizza dinner and salad. I actually put red pepper on my pizza, and it was really good (not as hot as I had expected). After dinner I needed to do some work for my job online so I did that while everyone else talked and Marcus played the piano for us. We left around 8 PM to go back to the hotel. Megan and I watched Switched at Birth until we had seen all the new episodes!! It is a TV series about two girls who were switched in the hospital so they grew up with the wrong parent(s). One girl becomes deaf due to meningitis, and she and her single mother lacking money move into the guest house of the other family who is rich.

We got up early and met the Whitesides at the visitor center at Rocky Mountain National Park to go to a campground church service in the park. It was run by college students, and they did a very good job but it was short, only 30 minutes. After the service we set out to hike! We had to take a bus to Bear Lake where we planned to hike. The trail was charming, but very busy. It was a complete circle around the lake and was about 1 mile. Fortunately it was not steep or curvy, it was plain and easy.
There were a lot of large rocks peeking out into the lake that were right off the path so we got some good photo opportunities out of them.
The view with the lake and the mountains in view is pretty incredible looking.
More family photos.
We went on another trail to Nymph Lake and happened to see elk, very close to the path, on a connecting trail.
Megan and I climbed the enormous rocks even though it was difficult with our shoes. Neither of us had gym shoes with good traction.
Mrs. Ellie was tuckered out after a long uphill climb to Nymph Lake.
The Overzet girls.
Megan and mom and dad at Nymph Lake.
After our hike to Nymph Lake we decided to do a driving tour for the most part for the rest of the day. We took Trail Ridge Road and stopped at the indicated stops along the route. We did a little more hiking, but not as intense.

Mrs. Ellie and Mr. Richard needed to go after we were done with Trail Ridge Road to get Mr. Don Whiteside (Mr. Richard's father) so we dropped them off at the visitor center and then went into Estes Park again and walked along the road littered with shops and restaurants. There was also a river walk on the back side of the street where restaurants had patios to expose patrons to the river. One store we went into had an enormous collection of geodes.
For dinner we left Estes Park, and went to Smokin' Daves BBQ. Since I had already had BBQ pulled pork last night I decided to order a salmon reuben since I had never heard of it anywhere else! It turned out to be pretty good. Nelson got the "Man-handler" which was a 1.2 lb burger topped with pulled pork, bacon, and cheddar cheese. He ate the ENTIRE thing!!!! The baked beans were really sweet and the best I think I've ever had! I definitely want to come back here!!!
When we got back to the hotel I had a little surprise waiting for me! My friend Andrew had mailed me a neuron stuffed animal thing! It's so fun!

7/23/11

It's SATURDAY!!! Time to hike! We headed into the Rocky Mountains for a strenuous 7.4 mile hike climbing almost 2500 feet in elevation landing us at around 11,500 ft elevation!!! My the air was thin! The worst thing about the hike was that the path was very rocky and difficult. It wasn't just a dirt path you could easily follow, it was intense and treacherous.
We got some good family photos along the way.
Maybe one of them will be our Christmas card :)
And the best photos once we reached the top. The top of the mountain was narrow and pure rock. The trail was called twin sisters because we climbed to the top of a mountain that had two heads.
Mom and dad.

In this picture you can see my lying at the top of one peak and Nelson (a tiny speck in the distance) on the top of the other peak.
We spent some time relaxing at the top and then headed out so that we could make it down in time for some dinner. Overall the entire hike took us around 5 hours, which was much faster than a lot of other hikers we saw...although we also saw two actually running the trail! I would have surely gotten a sprained ankle if I had tried to run that trail.
More pictures at the top.
The descent, you can see how rocky and steep the trail is.
At the top again. The pictures are a little jumbled up.
This is the view of one peak from the other peak. You can once again see Nelson the tiny speck if you look really closely. He is just to the right of the divet in the middle of the mountain.
We were EXHAUSTED after the long hike and super thirsty even though we brought two water bottles each! We were also starving, as we had just had sandwiches and chips on the hike up.
We went to Estes Park to search for some food in the Rocky Mountains! We found a place called Big Horn restaurant. My dad got an elk burger, it has a gamier taste and the meat is tougher. Megan and my mom got buffalo burgers, which basically taste the same as cow. It was a wonderful day, and we were thankful that the next day wasn't going to be nearly as intense!

7/22/11

Friday! Kristin gave me the day off to do things with my family. We got up this morning and traveled to Georgetown, CO a colonial town in the mountains. The town is situated right in a valley between the mountains and has charming buildings for the most part on one little block. There is also a local old fashioned train that we decided to try out, so we spent some time wandering around downtown Georgetown peeking into stores and googling over the architecture of the buildings with the mountain background before driving back to the train station where we had bought our train tickets. My dad accidentally backed into a wooden pole while parking so now there is a little dent on the back of the van! Accidents happen :)...but as my dad says, its the problems you had on the vacation that you look back and laugh at, not how everything went perfectly. Below you can see my dad at the Hotel de Paris. It's a quaint hotel situated right downtown. My mom wanted to go inside but we didn't have time to scope it out. There were beautiful hanging and potted flowers in bloom everywhere! Looking down the street was quite a sight to behold.

After we finished our time moseying around downtown we headed back to the train station for the Georgetown Loop Railroad with our roundtrip passes. Our train left at 12:10 PM. We brought our lunches on board so we could eat while we rode. The conductor had to move the front pulling part of the train to the other side since there wasn't enough room for the train to turn around! We got to see beautiful views of the mountains and rivers high up on the train tracks that ran over bridges and through mountain paths.
The train stopped in the small city of Silver Plume. We got off and looked in the visitor center, but there wasn't anywhere else we could get to without a car so we hopped back on the train and got the very back seats while the conductor once again moved the front portion of the train to the former back (in effect turning the train around!) We got prime view looking out the back of the train as we rode along with nothing in the way!

After our train excursion we headed back to Georgetown in search of ice cream. We heard that there was an old soda/ice cream parlor from 1901 in town and easily located it. The owners were so nice! Nelson and I got root beer floats, my dad got a malt, and the other three family members got homemade ice cream! My root beer float was so delicious! They had the old style soda fountains where the sugar component of the soda is separate from the carbonation.

Next we headed to the beautiful Mount Evans. The road to the top of Mount Evans is the highest paved road in North America! We started seeing snow and knew we were getting closer!
Near the top we encountered some new friends, little shedding billy goats...or something of the sort all over! Mom and Megan wanted a picture with our new friends!

Nelson and I climbed to a precariously positioned outcropping of rock! If you look carefully you can see Nelson, that little dot on the edge of the cliff. It was so much fun rock climbing, even though it was a little bit scary and very draining, especially at such a high elevation!!
My mom climbed all the way to the tippy top! Look at her waving :)

Absolutely breathtaking views from atop Mount Evans.

Sista sista picture! On that outcropping. Nelson also took one of Megan "holding" me! Trick of perspective from afar.

This pictures don't even do justice for how beautiful God's creation in Colorado is!

On our way back down the mountain we saw a deer and mom and dad were trying to take pictures of it. It disappeared into the brush but we pulled over and mom and dad went on a little trail that lead to some old trees. In the meantime the deer reappeared RIGHT in front of our green van and attempted to eat the gravel in front of it! It was so funny how excited my parents were to take a picture of the deer and then they disappeared down a path right before the deer approached us! When other tourists slowed down to take pictures of the deer in front of our giant green van, the deer would scamper off for a moment, but always come back to the same place giving us a front row seat to watching him attempt to eat. Mom and dad finally got back to the car and scared the deer off! At least they got to see him for a moment!
After our escapades at Mount Evans we headed over to the Whiteside's house for a BBQ dinner! Mr. Richard grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and we had deviled eggs and salad. It was a delicious and filling dinner after our intense hiking. We played frisbee with Lucky (their dog) and then Nelson, Megan, Marcus, and I played a game of Munchkin (the card game we got Nelson for his bday). Following our game we went downstairs and watched the movie "The Adjustment Bureau" with the parents.

7/21/11

Today I was supposed to have a case around noon so my family decided to go back to Golden to go to a Buffalo Bill exhibit and sight see some other things. Megan came with me to the post office to deliver my camera back to the manufacturer Olympus because it had stopped working. Then we ran to Target to get Megan a new camera charger since she couldn't find hers. My case got cancelled and so Kristin asked me to instead meet her at the Denver office to practice setting up on the dummy. I decided to take the Boulder Valley bus down from the stop at Sheridan and 36 because it went straight to the corner where the office is at, and had a ride that was arriving just before 2 PM which is when I was scheduled to meet up with Kristin. Kristin was very impressed that I was willing to ride the bus with the dummy. He didn't bother me though, he just sat quietly next to me the whole ride :)

At the Denver office I practiced setting up the dummy for a surgery or two and finished at the perfect timing. My family came to pick me up around 5 when they got done in Golden. The traffic was just starting up, and we headed to Centennial to go to the Huess's house. We know the Huess's from Bethel. Pastor Huess now preaches at a church here in Colorado.
(A view of downtown, I really enjoy the energy of the downtown area, there are always people walking around or lounging on patios, and this street is constantly decorated with lights and other things, today it was American flags)
We finally made it to the Huess's around 6:15! They had made a delicious Italian meal. To kick things off there was fresh, home baked Italian bread and an olive oil, Italian herbs, and garlic mixture to dip it in. Mrs. Susan had picked fresh vegetables from her garden and made a delicious salad with pears on it! For dinner we ate spicy sausage lasagna and "pasta butter," the sauce containing buffalo meat! Ice cream was for desert and after dinner, Nelson, Megan, Marcus and I watched a movie (well, I fell asleep from eating too much, food coma) while the parents chatted.

7/20/11

What a wonderful day! And all because I got to spend it with my long lost family who was reunited to me in the wonderful state of Colorado! This morning we went to the Whitesides after breakfast with packed lunches. After visiting with the Whitesides for a while at their house (Don, Mr. Richard's father had lunch and was driving around with a family friend) we had lunch together. We had packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Following lunch, Mr. Don Whiteside was dropped back off at the house and we all went to the Coors Brewery in Golden Colorado. We got VIP handicap access with our own tour guide instead of the typical headset! Here Nelson, Megan, Marcus and I stand in front of a huge brew kettle outside the brewery.
Coors and Miller recently have joined forces, but the beers that Coors brews include the Blue Moon family, the Keystone family, Leinenkugel's, Colorado Native (only found in Colorado), Batch 19, and Killian's, among other things. At the beginning of the tour we got to see some of the most popular beers brewed by Coors.
The tour commenced with an area where we were able to see, touch, and smell the main ingredients used to make beer: malted wheat and barley, water, and hops (which give beer that characteristic bitter taste in certain blends). We got to see the beer making process and see the brew kettles and mash tuns.
At the end of the tour, after seeing the packaging plant we were brought to the tasting room where we had wristbands that allowed us to try a glass of 3 beers. They had Coors, Coors Light, Killians, Colorado Native, Batch 19, Blue Moon, and the Blue Moon Summer Seasonal.
It turns out my mom doesn't only like wine anymore. She really enjoyed Blue Moon. It's a wheat beer that has fruitier flavors, but not too strong.
After the brewery we went back to the Whitesides where Mr. Richard's brother was waiting to get Mr. Don for dinner. We dropped him off with them and then headed to an Italian buffet in between our hotel in Westminster and the Whitesides house in Lakewood. The restaurant was called Cinzetti's. It was around $13/person and was really good! They had a wide variety of foods and desserts and even had a girl making crepes. It was a good end to the day! We went our separate ways after dinner and Megan and I watch some TV episodes online together before falling asleep!
